Van Gogh Alive (Brisbane) – event review

Take your gallery experience to the next level with Van Gogh Alive, a multi-sensory experience focused on the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh.

This global touring exhibit / event opened runs in Brisbane from October 2021 to January 2022 (at the time of publishing), at the emerging new event precinct Northshore Hamilton.

The custom designed space includes a Van Gogh’s bedroom brought to life in painterly detail; Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night, a charming bar / cafe setting where you can ‘be’ in the painting while enjoying a glass of Taittinger champagne; and lifesize field of sunflowers, referred to as the Infinity Sunflower Room, where you can literally surround yourself with the blooms from one of the artists most revered works.

The fourth space is a massive gallery hall with floor to ceiling digital screens and projection panels. The screens run looped images of Van Gogh’s works, in between quotes from the artist himself and panels that introduce the time period, location and influences on the painter’s life when they were created. A charming sound guides visitors through the moods and cultures that are reflected in the works. A sign at the entrance even describes the scents that are piped into the space, to help create the multi-sensory experience.

For art lovers, this is a one of a kind immersive experience to get up close, personal and even INTO the iconic works of Van Gogh. Most of us can only dream of seeing the artists entire catalogue of works, and this exhibit brings together all the major pieces and some lesser known works, all of which are stunning to look at and learn about. It’s a wonderful way of bringing art to the world, while we are all limited in our travel opportunities.

To see the full digital projection exhibit, visitors should allow 30 to 40 minutes in the gallery, plus extra time for the Insta-worthy foyer and interactive spaces. The exhibit is suitable for all ages, and you can choose to take in as little or as much of the information and visuals as you choose. Kids will love being photographed IN the artworks, which have been meticulously recreated in; OR having the works wash over them via the amazing projection technology.
