Recently we had Bad Grandpa, in which Jackass star Johnny Knoxville disguised himself as an old man and embarked on a series of pranks that startled and shocked unexpecting onlookers. That film was tacky, but it had several laugh out loud moments. Unlike this dumb, tacky and tasteless comedy starring Oscar winning actor Robert De…
Have you ever wanted to be an actor or voice over talent? Well, here’s your chance, although Daniel Kitson would hate me for saying so because he makes his view of actors clear in the show (or is it really his view?). The British comedian has written an off the wall script, in which he argues with…
A powerful, historically-based yarn about bigotry and politics, A United Kingdom tells of the rise of Botswana as an independent nation. Based upon fact, it also happens to be a rich and respectful love story. In 1947 Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo – Selma), a brilliant young African law student, met Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike –…
With Scrublands we had the bush, with Silver we have the sea. It will be interesting to see if Hammer’s next book is set in a grotty city capital, just to complete the trifecta of the Australian way of living. Silver is set in a coastal town that is struggling to stay relevant and facing…
Over the last decade, streaming services have changed the face of both television and movies. It hasn’t always been for the best; but occasionally the rise of streaming has provided some real benefits. The 1980 Wimbledon Men’s Final is widely regarded as one of the great tennis matches in sporting history. It was an epic five-set encounter between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. Ice-cool Swedish champion Borg, the world number one, was attempting to win a record fifth consecutive Wimbledon title. Brash American upstart McEnroe, known as the “super…
In the still-hot realm of Korean cinema, few directors are hotter than Park Chan-wook. The creative force behind Oldboy, The Handmaiden and the miniseries The Little Drummer Girl is back with an intriguing twist on film noir with Decision to Leave. This film owes much to the master of the genre, Alfred Hitchcock, but Park…
A comment often made about Bruny is that readers going in did not know it was going to be such a political read. Bruny is one of those works that very effectively puts the frighteners on for many fronts; climate change, politics, foreign investment, cultural divides – swing the proverbial, you’ll find it here. The…
When Australian filmmaker Robert Connolly directs a feature film, audiences pay attention. His latest is The Dry, and this thriller doesn’t disappoint. Based on Jane Harper’s novel of the same title, The Dry powerfully depicts a community in crisis. Connolly’s previous feature, Paper Planes (2014) proved a surprise hit, and there’s no reason The Dry…
I’ve had this book on my shelf for a while but after a run of books focusing on the Nazi regime, I held off reading it until I was ready. When I finally picked up the novel, I discovered a quirky character tale that lingered with me. Here’s the blurb: Aged 105, Rose has endured more…
