Real Estate are currently one of the most consistent indie bands out there. They have always set the bar high for their style of artistic floating songs that are easy to get carried away in. The band’s fourth record, In Mind, is no different. The plodding guitar, the soft, slick and memorable vocals of Martin…
Tomorrowland was created by Walt Disney as a section of Disneyland that opened in California in 1955. The theme park was also populated with Adventureland, Frontierland and Fantasyland. It was a time when Americans imagined an optimistic future. Over the years since though, the public’s view of what was to come grew darker. That shift…

OK, I want you to stop for a moment and imagine a TV show that combines Harry Potter, Jane Austen and The Walking Dead. If you can get your head around that, you’ll have some idea what to expect from Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. This sumptuously made mini-series (7 episodes in total) is an…
What more effective tool of terror is there than your own high school reunion looming on the horizon to make you take a long hard look at how far you’ve come – or not? Who We Were drags the past of a group of thirty somethings back into the present as the prospect of being…
Disney seems to be lacking in creativity at the moment. Now I enter the cinema to see one of these box office fancies fearing the worst … and so it was with Justice League. In this one, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) has a restored faith in humanity, inspired by Superman’s selfless…
If provocative theatre and the art of confrontation are your thing, then have I got a play for you! Ulster American is wildly funny, but not for the feint-hearted. Playwright David Ireland takes aim at politics and the treatment of women. Jay Conway (Steve Bastoni) is an arrogant – but Oscar-winning – actor. The American…
A beaut way for the young to be introduced to opera in the company of loved ones. That is the key to the success of The Magic Pudding: The Opera, an operatic adaptation of Norman Lindsay’s 1918 children’s classic. The story concerns thievery of a cantankerous magic pudding named Albert. He is a walking, talking…
This Oscar-nominated Swedish comedy about a socially awkward grumpy old man rediscovering his humanity and the sense of community is essentially Gran Torino with subtitles. A Man Called Ove is a life-affirming tale. At first I thought it was going to be a Scandinavian variation of the perennial Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life, but…
