They are so damn good. It is not just the broad variety of circus arts on show that had me mesmerised, but the extremely high level of achievement from the second-year student ensemble. The physical feats of the fresh-faced performers, orchestrated by director Kate Fryer, all but defy belief.
That, plus the splendid showmanship and comedic interludes, provides a massive “wow” factor. The 15-strong contingent that take to the stage are super fit and strong and agile. Movements – at ground level and on high – are inevitably fluid.
Often different apparatus and props are in play at the same time while several acrobats ply their specialties at once. From the Chinese pole, rope, hoops, swinging pole and Cyr wheel, to the trapeze, shoulder pole, slackwire, straps and silks, it is all there over 70 minutes. Handstands and contortion, hat juggling and clowning – who could ask for more?
There is a delightful and alluring quirkiness about what we witness too. It is so exciting (exhilarating, actually) that one dares not avert their eyes for a second. The spectacle is enhanced by the choices of costuming – bold and evocative – undoubtedly adding richness to the experience.
The costume designer is Reuben James, who has worked in collaboration with Melbourne Polytechnic Costume Design students. So too the splendid sound and lighting cues, the work of Christopher Lewis and Eduard Inglés respectively. I have had the good fortunate to see a significant amount of professional circus and these gals and guys have big, big futures.
I speak of Shayla Ashton, Holly Muir, Kelsea Blackburn, Capri Palmer, Eliza Denlay, Elise Poulton, Tarnee Doye, Daniel Scrofani, Lara Elliot, Imogen Smith, Kiera Fitzgerald, Nina Smith, Laiken Jackson, James Wilson and Jaran Latona-Phasuk. Behind the Veil is entertainment personified. It is awe inspiring and fun. In short, and in good old English parlance, it blew me away.
