{"id":2381,"date":"2017-07-06T17:10:50","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T07:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/?p=2381"},"modified":"2017-07-06T16:19:22","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T06:19:22","slug":"vigil-arts-centre-melbourne-theatre-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/vigil-arts-centre-melbourne-theatre-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Vigil (Arts Centre Melbourne) &#8211; theatre review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a tour de force performance, the multi-talented Christie Whelan Browne (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Drowsy Chaperone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) takes us on a journey on Christmas Eve, while visiting her character\u2019s dying mother.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don\u2019t fret, <em>Vigil<\/em> is no downer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using Steve Vizard\u2019s words and lyrics, and composer Joe Chindamo\u2019s original music, Whelan Browne mesmerises us, switching seamlessly from humour to pathos.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She channels the persona of 30-something Liz and reflects her years in her mum\u2019s company.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Especially noteworthy are the moments of embarrassment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liz also seizes the opportunity to take a whack or two at her goody-two-shoes older sister.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former is nothing if not honest, but she is also decidedly needy, someone who hasn\u2019t always made the best choices in life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2387 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Vigil-01.jpg?resize=560%2C373\" alt=\"Credit: Claudio Raschella\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Vigil-01.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Vigil-01.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Vigil-01.jpg?resize=120%2C80&amp;ssl=1 120w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Vigil-01.jpg?resize=360%2C240&amp;ssl=1 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Returning after an extended period abroad, Liz is short of money and clearly likes to party.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whelan Browne chats and warbles (she has a delightful, clear singing voice), acutely proficient and comfortable in either mode, holding the audience in the palms of her hands for all 90 minutes without interval.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The melancholy notes are few, as the wit and verve in the writing shines through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a most accomplished display by a performer about whom I am fast running out of superlatives.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suffice to say, one is undoubtedly richer for having seen her in this dynamic and endearing show.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accompanying her on piano is composer Chindamo, with Zoe Black on violin and Molly Kadarauch on cello.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is much to be proud of and excited by here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vigil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a sheer delight from start to finish.
