cheese.\u00a0Now young adults, they have been living together for what seems like forever.\u00a0Bossy, at times hostile, Jane, who is deeply set in her ways, makes an art form of put downs at 400;\">From her youngest days, Lucy was apprehensive \u2026 lacking in confidence and Jane\u2019s tactlessness continues to work away at her.\u00a0Still, Jane, who is cynical at the best of times, chips away relentlessly.\u00a0Nothing Lucy does, apart from watching television with Jane, seems good enough for the latter.\u00a0So it is when Lucy \u2013 who has been struggling to find a suitable third housemate \u2013 latches onto a young and enthusiastic dancer, Alice.\u00a0It turns out that Alice is ever the optimist and encourages Lucy to see the brighter side of life and embrace it.\u00a0Tensions abound and friendship is well and truly tested.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156772 aligncenter\" 2017 solo show Roommates: The Musical.\u00a0As the title infers, it is about fraught interpersonal relationships.\u00a0The action morphs, back and forth, from the present to the past.\u00a0We witness the emergence of the power imbalance in the relationship between Lucy and Jane.\u00a0Lucy is in the throes of a meltdown as the two girls prepare to take to the stage in a school dance competition.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156769 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/rsz_share_house_the_musical_arts_centre_melbourne_2024_photo_credit_nick_manuell_0h1a9651.jpg?resize=560%2C374&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"374\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humour is a mainstay of Share House: The Musical, which frequently tickles the funny bone.\u00a0The characters are well drawn and deliciously exaggerated.\u00a0It is a superbly conceived and executed production. The narrative is often carried along by the up-tempo music and lyrics.\u00a0Written by Jude Perl, musical director Brendan Tsui and director Desiree Munro,\u00a0Perl and Tsui were also responsible for the songwriting.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156767 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/rsz_share_house_the_musical_arts_centre_melbourne_2024_photo_credit_nick_manuell_share_house_the_musical_arts_centre_melbourne_2024_photo_credit_nick_manuell_0h1a9210.jpg?resize=560%2C374&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"374\" voice of Perl, who plays the adult Lucy.\u00a0In fact, her acting and vocalisation are outstanding \u2013 the lifeblood of Share House.\u00a0Also impressive in tone and delivery are Isabelle Davis as the bitchy Jane and Anita Mei La Terra as the buoyant Alice.\u00a0Strong chemistry between Jasmine Tuvey as the young Lucy and Amie Zwag as the schoolgirl Jane adds a further layer.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156765 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/rsz_share_house_the_musical_arts_centre_melbourne_2024_photo_credit_nick_manuell_0h1a9586.jpg?resize=560%2C374&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"374\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For much of the piece, we are left asking if the disparate characters within it can ever fit together and make it work.\u00a0So, the colourful, jigsaw puzzle stage setting is not only creative, but most appropriate.\u00a0Props are kept to a minimum \u2013 little more than a three-person couch and few plastic milk crates on a colourful, jigsaw puzzle stage \u2013 but, dare I say, this musical sings.\u00a0The orchestra, positioned on stage, is first rate, taking to its task with gusto, after a lighthearted introduction.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156766 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/rsz_share_house_the_musical_arts_centre_melbourne_2024_photo_credit_nick_manuell_0h1a9812.jpg?resize=560%2C374&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/rsz_share_house_the_musical_arts_centre_melbourne_2024_photo_credit_nick_manuell_0h1a9812.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, undoubtedly prompt memories of their own formative rental experiences among a fair share of the audience.\u00a0Playing at Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne until 18<sup>th<\/sup> May, 2024, this
