That dates back to when Rosie first hid in one at the age of nine or 10.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_153803\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-153803\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-153803 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_2940_dt22ov_1263_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=560%2C373&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_2940_dt22ov_1263_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_2940_dt22ov_1263_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_2940_dt22ov_1263_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-153803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photos by Robert Catto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosie speaks about her friendship with former schoolmate Charlotte and an ongoing toilet flooding incident at their Catholic state primary school.\u00a0And then there is another mate, Zee.\u00a0Rosie and Zee met in a club toilet and began their transition at the same time.\u00a0Mind you, Zee has no time for Charlotte.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anderson begins her remarkably polished and nuanced monologue as Rosie speaking eloquently about the empowering impact of the pre-emptive wee.\u00a0That is letting things flow before it is really necessary, which brings with it an overwhelming sense of satisfaction.\u00a0Rosie\u2019s conviction is all but spiritual.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-153799\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_3030_dt22ov_1345_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=560%2C373&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_3030_dt22ov_1345_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_3030_dt22ov_1345_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_3030_dt22ov_1345_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But any sense of wellbeing is interrupted \u2013 as it is constantly throughout the performance \u2013 by a loud knocking sound.\u00a0It represents a couple of men thumping on the door of the bathroom, threatening Rosie\u2019s wellbeing.\u00a0Unfortunately, that experience is nothing new for her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the play unfolds, Rosie does everything from giving us further insights into her life to providing lipstick tips and, before this is over, the bathroom is flooded.\u00a0Anderson is a towering figure, both literally and figuratively.\u00a0She enters dressed in a crop top and mini skirt, huge rubber platform boots, graphic tights and puffer jacket.\u00a0With her is a handbag.\u00a0She is so compelling, you simply can\u2019t take your eyes of her.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-153801\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_1683_dt22ov_1404_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=560%2C373&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_1683_dt22ov_1404_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_1683_dt22ov_1404_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_1683_dt22ov_1404_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As her at times hilarious, troubling and heartfelt tale unfolds, she alternately vapes and smokes cigarettes.\u00a0As I said at the outset, Overflow is about survival \u2013 surviving the haters and misfits \u2026 the would-be destructors of self.\u00a0Anderson\u2019s timing is impeccable. She doesn\u2019t miss a beat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resonance in the work goes back to the writing. Travis Alabanza has given us their warts and all truth.\u00a0Direction from Dino Dimitriadis is exemplary.\u00a0They are also responsible for the utilitarian set.\u00a0That consists of two cubicles without doors, separated by a see-through wall, a large wash trough with working taps and a paper towel dispenser.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-153802\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_2770_dt22ov_1579_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=560%2C373&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_2770_dt22ov_1579_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_2770_dt22ov_1579_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/rsz_2770_dt22ov_1579_A%C2%A9_robert_catto.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sound \u2013 loud effects and loud music \u2013 is a significant player in Overflow.\u00a0Danni Esposito is the sound designer and composer who leaves a lasting impression.\u00a0Overflow, too, is not easily forgotten as Rosie prepares to confront her aggressors with a clear conscience.\u00a0It is playing at Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne, as part of Midsumma, until 4<sup>th<\/sup> February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It then moves to Geelong Arts Centre between 8<sup>th<\/sup> and 10<sup>th<\/sup> February, 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex First<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Survival is at stake when stunning brunette Rosie (Janet Anderson) finds herself cornered in a bathroom.\u00a0She is a transwoman who has had to endure a great deal and continues to do so.\u00a0Above all, she has learnt to be true to herself.\u00a0Bathrooms are a constant thread running through Overflow.
