{"id":149716,"date":"2023-09-14T07:56:09","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T21:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/?p=149716"},"modified":"2023-09-14T07:56:09","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T21:56:09","slug":"slutnik-2-planet-of-incels-theatre-works-theatre-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/slutnik-2-planet-of-incels-theatre-works-theatre-review\/","title":{"rendered":"SLUTNIK 2: Planet of Incels (Theatre Works) &#8211; theatre review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SLUTNIK 2: Planet of Incels has cult classic written all over it.\u00a0Think lashings of The Rocky Horror Show liberally mixed with Magic Mike and you have a starting point.\u00a0The theme is women treated poorly and men behaving badly.\u00a0It is a play with a series of up-tempo musical numbers, accompanied by buff male dancers.\u00a0Unfortunately, I didn\u2019t see SLUTNIK, which premiered in February 2022, as part of Midsumma.\u00a0Fortunately, in the foyer of Theatre Works is a useful ready reckoner, which in half a dozen frames, complete with visuals, explains the back story.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149720\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-149720 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-11.jpg?resize=560%2C373&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-11.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-11.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-11.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-149720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photos by Sarah Clarke<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SLUTNIK 2: Planet of the Incels\u2019 program also notes that more than a century ago a crew of lesbian space cannibals left Earth and its problems behind.\u00a0Today, their descendants and the artificially intelligent Motherboard (Matilda Rose Gibbs) are forced to emergency land their battered star-ship on a foreign planet.\u00a0There, they come face-to-face with the difficulties they thought they had left behind: men.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In need of assistance and suggesting a trade, 3122 Florence (Sara Reed) extends the hand of friendship, even though Motherboard warns her to be wary.\u00a0Indeed, Motherboard\u2019s instincts are spot on as these rhinestone cowboys are horrible \u2013 two faced, self-serving, misogynistic and downright nasty.\u00a0They humiliate and degrade one another, let alone try to exploit the unfortunate situation in which 3122 Florence and Motherboard find themselves.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149721 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-7.jpg?resize=560%2C373&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-7.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-7.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-7.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulling the strings is Jon (Ben Smith), appropriately kitted out in black.\u00a0Foremost among the recipient of his bile is Neo (Ethan Morse), although Elon\u2019s (Michael Cooper) \u201cugliness\u201d is cause for discontent.\u00a0Elliot\u2019s (Ben Ashby) attempts at \u201cbreaking bread\u201d with 3122 Florence are swiftly denounced by Jon.\u00a0The final piece of the men\u2019s showcase is Ben (William Strom), who appears to delight in the putdowns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SLUTNIK 2 is loads of sexualised fun, which \u2013 I dare say \u2013 will find greatest favour among a younger audience.\u00a0Written by Flick, the show is clever and comedic, with strong performances.\u00a0I was particularly impressed by the \u201crobotic\u201d turn from Matilda Rose Gibbs as Motherboard. Her eyes and movements were telling.\u00a0So, too, the youthful enthusiasm and kindness inherent in Sara Reed\u2019s portrayal of 3122 Florence.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149723 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-12.jpg?resize=560%2C373&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-12.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-12.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/rsz_slutnik_20_-_sneak_peek_-12.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dance numbers are tuneful and feature feats of athleticism, which go down a treat.\u00a0The music includes It\u2019s Raining Men by The Weather Girls, Queen\u2019s Don\u2019t Stop Me Now, Madonna\u2019s Don\u2019t Tell Me and Let Me Show You by K-Klass.\u00a0Sand and glitter are ever present, while Emily Busch\u2019s evocative costuming is triumphant.\u00a0Complete with audio visual elements (the work of Derrick Duan), the punters\u2019 visceral reaction (think wolf whistles) says it all.
