Untitled Three-Hander is a four-hander, with primary concentration on three characters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_148403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148403\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-148403 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_7.jpg?resize=560%2C373&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_7.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_7.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_7.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photos by Christapor Yaacoubian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those played by Hayden Hayes and Declan Clifford are housemates. Both are pig-headed and set in their ways.\u00a0Dressed up to the nines (he is wearing a tuxedo), Hayes is preparing to meet a girl he broke up with nearly seven years ago (a role filled by Abigail King).\u00a0He\u2019s desperate to get back together with her. Clifford urges him to play it cool, but Hayes refuses to listen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clifford too has met a lass, Rillo (Lizzie Ballinger) that he likes and she\u2019s about to drop over.\u00a0When she does, Clifford makes it particularly awkward for her.\u00a0After indicating she wants to keep things casual, Rillo rethinks her stance.\u00a0Before you know it, she has moved in with the boys and is playing mother hen.\u00a0But these are lads that are forever sweating the small stuff and their petty bickering is becoming tiresome.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-148404 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_4.jpg?resize=560%2C373&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_4.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_4.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_4.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intent in Untitled Three-Hander is clear, but laugh aloud moments are in short supply.\u00a0Several of the circuitous arguments between the chaps become quite testing for the audience. I wanted to enjoy the play more than I did.\u00a0The writing needed to be tighter, cleverer and more substantive (yes, even though, the interactions are often about the inane). I felt it was overtalked. Often less is more.\u00a0I also thought the pacing could have been quickened. Direction is from Tony Rive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, none of the three central players is particularly likeable (I was looking for greater warmth) \u2026 and they come across as vacuous.\u00a0Sixty minutes without interval would have done me.\u00a0Performance-wise, Lizzie Ballinger stood out, although I didn\u2019t buy the supposed chemistry she had with Declan Clifford.\u00a0I appreciated the slick scene changes, which worked seamlessly.\u00a0Also, the program, written US Playbill style (in this case with fake ads) is a hoot.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-148407 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_1.jpg?resize=560%2C840&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_1.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_untitled_1.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summary then, conceptually Untitled Three-Hander is solid, but it needs work.\u00a0It is on at The MC Showroom until 6<sup>th<\/sup> August, 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex First<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the vein of the TV sitcom Seinfeld (1989-1998) and perhaps best summed up as \u201cmuch ado about nothing\u201d, Untitled Three-Hander deals with several inconsequential issues.\u00a0Mind you, at the heart of this new work by Hayden Hayes is human connection and a desire to be wanted and needed.\u00a0The title is a deliberate misnomer.
