Her aunt dismisses the noise as that of birds.\u00a0But Joan insists it was more like a person screaming, going on to reveal the details of what ensued.\u00a0She admits to having climbed out the window, into a tree and being witness to some apparently sinister goings on.\u00a0There were people, a lorry, cries, striking and blood.\u00a0Given the weight of all those happenings, Harper relents and tells Joan the truth (or, at least, her version of it). She implores Joan to keep it a secret.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_148042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148042\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-148042 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_alison_whyte_and_darcy_sterling-cox.jpg?resize=560%2C374&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_alison_whyte_and_darcy_sterling-cox.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_alison_whyte_and_darcy_sterling-cox.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_alison_whyte_and_darcy_sterling-cox.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photos by Cameron Grant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, we cut to a hat factory, where a long serving milliner, Todd (Darcy Kent), is working alongside Joan (Lucy Ansell), for whom it is her first day on the job.\u00a0The pair crafts personalised, often outrageous head covering for regular hat parades.\u00a0Todd is deeply suspicious about how the company they work for wins its contracts. He believes management is corrupt and the employees are underpaid.\u00a0He and Joan quickly strike a chord. Joan proves to be highly creative, but before long she, too, is spooked.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-148039 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_lucy_ansell_and_darcy_kent1.jpg?resize=560%2C374&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_lucy_ansell_and_darcy_kent1.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_lucy_ansell_and_darcy_kent1.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_lucy_ansell_and_darcy_kent1.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With fine performances, an evocative set and lighting, and haunting music, Far Away certainly piqued my interest.\u00a0I found Far Away compelling, but confusing because, as is my usual practice, I saw the play without reading about it first.\u00a0It ended and I didn\u2019t fully comprehend just what went down.\u00a0It was only when I read about it subsequently that the pieces started to fall into place.\u00a0Hence, I want to provide some context.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-148041 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_lucy_ansell_and_darcy_kent.jpg?resize=560%2C374&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_lucy_ansell_and_darcy_kent.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_lucy_ansell_and_darcy_kent.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_lucy_ansell_and_darcy_kent.jpg?resize=272%2C182&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British playwright Caryl Churchill has written an incendiary work in which the world is on the precipice, increasing sliding into chaos.\u00a0As an adult, we meet Joan 15 years after we first encounter her.\u00a0Foreboding is apparent throughout. Characters are afraid of speaking freely because of the potential consequences.\u00a0It appears that Big Brother is watching.\u00a0Although perplexing, I greatly appreciated the intensity of the production.\u00a0The hat parade \u2013 a cavalcade of the bizarre \u2013 is certainly an eye opener.\u00a0The representation of the factory, with a surfeit of hat boxes positioned far and wide, and an extended desk on which the product is created, is superb. Dann Barber is the designer.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-148038 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_darcy_kent.jpg?resize=560%2C840&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_darcy_kent.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rsz_darcy_kent.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the actors do fine jobs trying to navigate the distress inherent in the piece.\u00a0Director Cassandra Fumi has given each of them breathing room and, as a result, they excel.\u00a0Alison Whyte sets the tone. Noray Hosny shows persistence. Darcy Kent is determined, but apprehensive.
