{"id":141635,"date":"2022-06-17T00:43:59","date_gmt":"2022-06-16T14:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/?p=141635"},"modified":"2022-06-18T12:49:24","modified_gmt":"2022-06-18T02:49:24","slug":"show-people-chapel-off-chapel-theatre-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/show-people-chapel-off-chapel-theatre-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Show People (Chapel Off Chapel) &#8211; theatre review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bold, brassy, belligerent, sensitive and respectful.\u00a0The supremely talented Christie Whelan-Browne is all that and much more, as she tackles the thorny subject of making it in the world of musical theatre.\u00a0Not content with playing herself, she assumes multiple personas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First up, a new graduate \u2013 Jessica \u2013 whose job it is to introduce Ms Whelan-Browne nervously attends to her duties.\u00a0That is before she seizes the opportunity to showcase her own diverse talent in a fast-paced mash up medley.\u00a0In reality, \u201cJessica\u201d succeeds in showcasing Whelan-Browne\u2019s dynamic range, which is, of course, the whole point.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-141674 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rsz_show_people0165_1_1-1.jpg?resize=560%2C840&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rsz_show_people0165_1_1-1.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rsz_show_people0165_1_1-1.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, seemingly perpetual understudy Candice tries to gain an understanding of why she is always playing second fiddle while her classmates are, by now, assuming lead roles.\u00a0In Candice, a healthy ego and vulnerability make for very human bedfellows. Whelan-Browne\u2019s masterful comic timing are highlights of both the first two acts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A change up number from a hot chorus boy follows, after which we are introduced to a 33-year-old artist chatting with her agent while waiting for her next big role to come through.\u00a0Her maternal instincts kick in and she wonders whether she can continue to undertake the rigorous routine demanded of a musical theatre star.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paddy is a knockabout Aussie leading man with tickets on himself who tries in vain to brush off overstepping the mark with a company newcomer.\u00a0Margie\u2019s best is well and truly behind her. Just a handful or two trickle in to see her perform in penny and dime halls far from the big smoke.\u00a0Refined Edmund\u2019s show business life has been filled with adulation and triumph. He reflects on his long hurrah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whelan-Browne\u2019s is yet another performance for the ages.\u00a0I say that because I have followed her career closely and I never cease to marvel at her profound ability. In fact, truth be told, I am in awe of it.\u00a0Here she pushes the boundaries even further.\u00a0Make no mistake, this is a complex work, which demands changes of pace and mood.\u00a0It is heavy on dialogue and accent shifts. Why am I not surprised that Whelan-Browne excels? She does not miss a beat.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-141675 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rsz_show_people0128_1_1-1.jpg?resize=560%2C840&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rsz_show_people0128_1_1-1.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theblurb.com.au\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rsz_show_people0128_1_1-1.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through her characterisations, she even finds time to take a few hilarious digs at herself.\u00a0The audience \u2013 quite rightly \u2013 laps it all up for Whelan-Browne delights and surprises.\u00a0Bravo. Bravo.\u00a0Much credit, too, must go to the writer and director Dean Bryant, who knows just how to make Whelan-Browne shine. He is a supreme talent in his own right.\u00a0And it would be remiss of me not to also compliment Whelan-Browne\u2019s fall guy in the show, her deliberately humourless music director and the man tickling the ivories, Mathew Frank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show People is playing at Chapel Off Chapel until 18<sup>th<\/sup> June, 2022.
