Elsa (Jemma Rix) is the first born of two daughters to the reigning monarchs of Arendelle, the other being Anna (Courtney Monsma).\u00a0Anna is a real live wire \u2013 a bundle of energy.\u00a0She enjoys the company of her sister and playing with her.\u00a0That includes the late-night antics of building a snow man who she names Olaf (Matt Lee), which Elsa sprinkles with fairy dust.\u00a0In fact, those silver sparkles are just one of her powers. The most overwhelming is that she is seemingly unable to control the ability to freeze others \u2013 literally.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

An incident with six-year-old Anna confirms that and with the approval of her parents Elsa vows to separate herself from the world, and that includes her beloved sister.\u00a0After the King and Queen unexpectedly pass away, Elsa has to bide her time before she is anointed as the head Royal \u2013 an event she is dreading, because it will again bring her into contact with many from the kingdom and beyond.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Anna doesn\u2019t understand why Elsa has cut her off. She dreams of romance and love \u2026 and before you know it, she seemingly meets the man of her dreams \u2013 the 13th son of the King of a very small island to the South.\u00a0He is known as Hans of the Southern Isles (Thomas McGuane).\u00a0Very soon, he is asking her to marry him and Anna seeks Elsa\u2019s permission to do so and stay with her in Arendelle.\u00a0But she turns her down and as tempers flare the kingdom is turned to ice \u2026 and Elsa flees.\u00a0Many more adventures ensue, as Anna \u2013 with the help of Kristoff (Sean Sinclair) and his reindeer \u2013 pursues Elsa.<\/p>\n

Academy Award winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez have added 12 new songs just for the musical.\u00a0There are 13 numbers in the first act and eight in the second.\u00a0The book of the Broadway show is by Oscar winning writer Jennifer Lee, choreographed by Tony Award winner Rob Ashford and direction by fellow Tony Award winner Michael Grandage.\u00a0Several of the numbers are stirring, as the story unfolds partly through the well-crafted lyrics.<\/p>\n

Jemma Rix and Courtney Monsma are superb as the adult Elsa and Anna, the former measured and the latter cheeky and sassy as their respective roles demand.\u00a0Their vocals are pure and strong. They display enviable control, each note carried to perfection.\u00a0They truly are magnificent performers and endear themselves to an appreciative audience.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I adored Matt Lee as Olaf\u2019s puppet master. He has a great sense of comic timing and his delivery is impeccable.\u00a0Aljin Abella revels in his role as the \u201cdiminutive\u201d, arrogant and scheming Duke of Weselton, making him a popular villain.\u00a0Elsa\u2019s big musical number \u201cLet It Go\u201d comes at the end of Act I and knocks it out of the park, leaving the audience on a high for interval \u2026 with much more to come after the break.\u00a0A rollicking tune \u2013 \u201cHygge\u201d \u2013 at the start of Act II, featuring nude-coloured frolics and kicked off by Blake Appelqvist as high mountains, high priced, shop proprietor Oaken puts a smile on the dial.<\/p>\n

The set changes are frequent and impressive (the scenic and costume design is by Christoper Oram).\u00a0Among other locales, the solid, colourful and elegant \u201cworks of art\u201d represent Elsa and Anna\u2019s home in Arendelle and the ice palace Elsa creates in the North Mountain.\u00a0But that is not all \u2013 magical \u201csurprises\u201d are in store for those who venture into the Her Majesty\u2019s Theatre in a show that is sure to delight young and old audiences alike.<\/p>\n

Frozen, the stage spectacular, is a showcase of all the world loves about Disney \u2013 a vibrant, energetic, family friendly storyline meshed with wonderful, beautifully performed, ear pleasing music.\u00a0It is playing at Her Majesty\u2019s Theatre in Melbourne.<\/p>\n
