OK, I want you to stop for a moment and imagine a TV show that combines Harry Potter, Jane Austen and The Walking Dead. If you can get your head around that, you’ll have some idea what to expect from Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. This sumptuously made mini-series (7 episodes in total) is an…
American playwright, Lisa D’Amour wrote Detroit in 2010 for the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Chicago. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2011, which was awarded to Clybourne Park, by Bruce Norris. The play is set in the backyards of two next-door-neighbours, in the first ‘ring’ of suburbia, now, and, although, the play is…
“Way to go Jennifer”. For me she’s the first one who succeeds in removing the yoke of the sitcom Friends and play a character that doesn’t remind you of that caricature appearance she played in it. Look at David Schwimmer in The Iceman and you see Ross with a totally wrong, fake moustache. Even Matthew…
Based on a true story, Last Cab to Darwin is a rich and beautifully written character study that tells the story of Rex Macrae (Michael Caton), a taxi driver from Broken Hill diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer, who drives all the way to Darwin to try and take advantage of the new euthanasia laws being…
Titus is a story of revenge. It is an exploration of the raw, primal instinct for revenge. And what sweet, sweet revenge it turned out to be. Titus Andronicus, as performed by the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble is one of the most engaging pieces of theatre, let alone Shakespeare I have seen for quite some time….
This crime drama is set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically the most dangerous year in the city’s history. The story plays out within a maze of rampant political and industry corruption that is plaguing the streets of a city in decay. Doing business at the epicenter of capitalism became fraught…
A haunting English period drama in the vein of Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Virgin Suicides, The Falling concerns the outbreak of mass hysteria at an all-girls school in the ‘60s. Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) stars as Lydia, a whip-smart, angst-ridden teenager who lives in a cramped hairdressing salon with her older brother…
In terms of views and images, Jupiter Ascending is a spectacle with an impressive space footage, sometimes rousing action sequences and titillating extraterrestrial fantasies. But just as a book of Jack Vance, it really doesn’t make any sense in the beginning. The difference is that while reading that book of Vance, the intended message becomes…
He promised he’d be back, and it’s good to report that Arnold Schwarzenegger has returned to the Terminator franchise that made him a bona fide box office draw card looking little worse for wear. Thirty years ago James Cameron gave us an ambitious mix of sci-fi and action in the original Terminator movie about an…
A brief sexual encounter between Jay (Maika Monroe, from The Guest) and Hugh (Jake Weary) has terrifying consequences. An unwanted and malevolent presence begins following Jay everywhere and seems intent on killing her. The problem is that only she can see this mysterious and relentless boogeyman, and it can even change shape. Jay’s sister Kelly…
