New music round-up (for w/e 20 September 2024)

Our selection of the best new music across a range of genres from the week ending 20 September 2024.

The multi-award-winning tenor saxophonist, bandleader and composer Nubya Garcia’s new album, Odyssey, is out now on Concord Jazz. Following her critically acclaimed debut album, SOURCE, Odyssey is a majestic feat that blends orchestral arrangements with R&B, jazz and dub. Produced by Garcia in collaboration with Kwes, Garcia returns with Joe Armon-Jones (keys), Daniel Casimir (bass), Sam Jones (drums). Featured guests include and esperanza spalding, Georgia Anne Muldrow and more.

The long-awaited new album by Jamie xx, In Waves, is the next chapter in the career of one of the most in-demand producers of his generation. With In Waves, Jamie replicates the emotional crescendos and thrilling volatility of an almost mystical night out– one where you return home in the cigarette ash dawn, the specifics of the last eight hours already blurring, but aware that these feelings will remain a crystalline memory.

Diamond-certified songwriter Chase Rice debuts his highly anticipated independent album, Go Down Singin’, a reflective 11-song collection that captures the raw, unvarnished truth of his personal journey. Today’s release marks a continuation of Rice’s creative evolution that began with last year’s critically acclaimed I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell, an album celebrated by Billboard as “one of 2023’s most unexpected artistic pivots” and one of the best of the year across all genres. As made evident by that introspective approach taken with the new music, Rice recognizes that life has to happen before you can really understand it. Playing football, getting hurt; NASCAR pit crews, moving on. Being swept up in a dream, hit singles, massive tours, stalling momentum. Growing up a good kid, but never quite becoming a man – and then suddenly the man you look up to the most is gone.

Vivaldi x2² is the new album from La Serenissima and their conductor Adrian Chandler. The new offering from baroque specialists La Serenissima presents seven double concerti by Antonio Vivaldi. These are some of Vivaldi’s most colourful and joyful works, and with director Adrian Chandler at the helm listeners can be sure of a generous dose of baroque excellence.

Between the release of his first album in 1962 and today, Marcos Valle has released twenty-two studio albums traversing definitive bossa nova, classic samba, iconic disco pop, psychedelic rock, nineties dance and orchestral music. He has also had his songs recorded by some of the all time greats, including Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn, Sergio Mendes, Elis Regina, and (last but not least), Emma Button of the Spice Girls. He has also had his music sampled by Jay-Z, Kanye West, Pusha T and many more. With his twenty-third studio album Túnel Acustico, Valle sets out to bring it all together.

Dead Beat Daddios is a loose collective of Melbourne roots and country musicians anchored by Hugh Martin and Jim Carden. Further Away is their fourth release following their debut album Dashboard Elvis in 2010 and the EPs Third Time Around (2015) and House For Sale (2023). Across the album the band display a fine range of styles, with country rock at its core. There’s the upbeat barroom groove of the title track and ‘1000 Lives’, the infectious, harder rocking alt-country of ‘Standing Still’ and the sublime, bluesy rhythms and licks of ‘One Thing’.

Jaz Karis is getting ready to take off. The 26-year-old south London singer and songwriter has been making waves with her silky voice and lyrical, candid pen since her first EP back in 2017, building herself up steadily over the years. Now her long-awaited arrival of Jaz Karis’ debut album, Safe Flight, is out. It’s a record about her journey so far, with her many trips back and forth between home and LA, figuring herself out in these new places.
