New music round-up

Our selection of the best new music across a range of genres from the week ending 29 November 2019.

Quick note: New music round-up will be on summer break from 10 December till late January 2020

The Letter String Quartet will be releasing their debut album (featuring Marita Dyson from The Orbweavers) next year. As a taster, they’ve revealed their next track, ‘Momento Mori’; a follow-up to debut single ‘All The Stories’. ‘Momento Mori’ is a cover of a song by The Orbweavers arranged for string quartet by TLSQ member, Biddy Connor. Originally released on The Orbweavers’ 2011 EP Japanese Mountain/Spotswood, the new single brings a renewed sense of melancholy and dramatisation with the strings as wistful as ever.

The Finks have just released their new album Affectations on tape & digital via Milk! Records / Remote Control. The  Finks  play the songs of Oliver Mestitz. The Finks have released a steady stream of quietly uncompromising music via Milk! Records since 2012 – three EPs, three albums, a couple of singles and the latest tape Affectations, a collection of covers and instrumentals and found sounds. Critics have described The Finks as “crushingly beautiful” and “perhaps the most underrated act in Australian music”.

Three years since the release of Mid Thirties Single Scene, Scott & Charlene’s Wedding have dropped a new six-track EP When in Rome, Carpe Diem ahead of their performance at Meredith Music Festival. Formed around Craig Dermody, the band is rooted in 90’s slacker sounds. They’ll also be returning to Adelaide for a hometown performance in the weekend prior to Meredith.

Six songs full of frank and honest observations about everyday life, ranging from everyday work laughs to coming to terms with the loss of important people in our lives, When in Rome is pure Scott & Charlene’s Wedding.

UK rap phenomenon Stormzy will be returning to Australian shores for a national tour in 2020. With his upcoming album Heavy Is The Head releasing December 13, Stormzy will perform his biggest shows to date in Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne & Brisbane this coming May.
