Pet sounds

Be Your Own Pet may look like your typical young and snotty punk rock wannabies but after taking their sophomore album Get Awkward for a spin, you find out quickly that not only have they matured a bit since their debut but that their music is pretty damn catchy.

They also now even have some controversy to raise their profile because their US label, Universal censored and deleted three of the album’s tracks because they were deemed too violent. So apparently, Be Your Own Pet and Ice T’s Body Count has something in common. How’s that for hardcore?

All of that aside and either, with or without the three tracks (they are still on the UK and Australian editions) Get Awkward is a bona fide success with its sharp tongue lyrics and the pogo bouncing style of lead vocalist Jemina Pearl. Her sneer and attitude oozes out of this record and easily puts her up there with the elite of the riot girls.

The pace is fast, the tracks are in your face, the lyrics are to the point, and Get Awkward is the punk record to own now, making Be Your Own Pet a band to watch out for as they take over 2008.
